We usually use cucumber in salads or raita. But for the change today I prepared Cucumber chutney (Dosakaya Mukkala Pachadi). I learned this recipe from my amma. It is packed with vitamins and minerals. It hardly takes 10 minutes for preparation and the taste is very delicious. Cucumber – 500g
Dhaniya (coriander leaves) – 20g
Green chills – 5 no
Dry chili – 4 no
Urad dal (split black gram) – 1 tbsp
Chana dal (split Bengal gram) – 1 tbsp
Till (sesame seeds) – 1 tbsp
Rai (mustard seeds) – 1 tsp
Methi (fenugreek seeds) – 1/4 tsp
Hing (asafetida) – a pinch
Haldi (turmeric) – ¼ tsp
(Optional) Sugar – 1 tsp
Emli (tamarind) – small lime size (removed seeds and thread)
Salt – as per taste
Oil – 1 tbsp
1-Wash and chop cucumber and green chills into small pieces. As shown in figure.
2-Heat a pan add 1 tbsp oil add chana dal. Sauté it.
3-When chana dal turns into light brown add urad dal, jeera and dry chills, fry it.
4-Then add mustard seeds, methi and till to it fry for a while. At last add hing and switch off the flame, take it out in a bowl. Allow it to cool. Fry it in medium flame.
5-In grinder add tempering, coriander leaves, salt, sugar, turmeric, tamarind and ¼ portion of chopped cucumber.
6-Grind it and make paste. (Not too smooth, little coarse is ok)
7-Mix this paste to chopped cucumber and green chills pieces.
8-Delicious cucumber chutney (Dosakaya Mukkala pachadi) is ready.
Serve with hot steamed rice, chapatti or any other breakfast recipe.
